Master’s students of the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies (PSPSR) program enrolled in the Art, Inclusion, and Disability course conducted a study visit at the Universitas Gadjah Mada Disability Service Unit (ULD UGM) on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 3:00 PM WIB. This activity is an integral part of the curriculum taught by Wuri Handayani, S.E., Ak., M.Si., M.A., Ph.D., designed to provide firsthand experience regarding inclusive practices within the campus environment. Located in the Bulaksumur Complex, ULD UGM stands as a testament to UGM’s commitment to providing equal and accessible education for persons with disabilities.
The session began with an introductory meeting between the students and the community at ULD UGM. The atmosphere was warm and open, fostering an inclusive space for interaction. Following the introduction, students attended a lecture covering several key topics such as disability aesthetics, the signpost in the history of the arts, body image and prosthetic aesthetics, and modelling disability. During the lecture, the professor shared various examples relevant to artistic practices and the lived experiences of the disabled body, while facilitating an interactive discussion among the students.
One of the most profound moments occurred when individuals with disabilities shared their personal journeys. An inspiring story came from a visually impaired participant who had successfully produced a film. This experience not only broadened the students’ perspectives on artistic practice but also reaffirmed that disability is not a barrier to creativity. This interaction served as a reflective space that enriched the students’ understanding of the concepts of inclusion and bodily representation in art.
The outing reached a high point during the closing session, which featured a musical performance by members of the disability community. They invited all participants to sing along, ending the study visit in a spirit of togetherness and joy. Through this experience, students gained more than just theoretical knowledge; they witnessed the lived reality of inclusion. The day concluded with a group photo session to document this meaningful learning experience.
Furthermore, this activity serves as a concrete step in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:
- SDG 4 (Quality Education): Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all, including persons with disabilities.
- SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities): Reducing inequality by empowering and promoting the social inclusion of all individuals, irrespective of disability status.
- SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions): Building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions by ensuring responsive decision-making that addresses the needs of all campus members. (BBA)
