Students of 2018 class of Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies accompanied by the Secretary of the Study Program, Dr. Rr. Paramitha Dyah Fitriasari, M.Hum. held community service activities at the Bina Siwi Orphanage, Sendang Sari Village Hall Complex, Pajangan, Bantul on September 10, 2019. This activity is a routine agenda for a study program that involves students to get involved directly in the community by carrying out various activities. This activity carries the theme "Development of Art Potential for Persons with Disabilities at the Bina Siwi Orphanage" with the slogan "Silaturasa".
The Bina Siwi orphanage is a Social Welfare Institution owned by the Sendang Sari village community that takes care of people with special needs (blind disabilities, deafness, Down syndrome, and intellectual disabilities). This orphanage is under the auspices of the Ngudiharjo Foundation with more than 35 people with disabilities and 9 administrators. The orphanage was built on village-owned land located in the Village Hall Complex of Sendangsari, Pajangan, Sendangsari, Jetis, Sendangsari, Pajangan District, Bantul, Yogyakarta Special Region, the location is far from the city centre. The orphanage was built with self-help funds and has a committee elected in the arrangement of persons with disabilities. Foundations or orphanages usually not only ask people with disabilities but take care of them and provide training for them to survive. This is what was then done by one of the Bina Siwi orphanages. Some of its activities are focused on sectors in the arts, such as gamelan; campur sari; hadroh; batik and handicrafts. Through these activities, the members of the orphanage are helped to have potential in the arts and be economically independent.
Activities carried out by dividing all residents of the orphanage into three groups. This group division aims to make it easier to provide assistance and training. The three groups will be divided into music, dance, and craft training groups. Music and dance training aims to provide assistance and training to all residents of the orphanage in the form of upgrading skills in playing musical instruments and dance movements. So the hope is that the Bina Siwi orphanage will have new creation of music and dance. That’s could be used by the residents of the orphanage if there are performances or other events that require music and dance performances. The handicraft training aims to provide assistance and training to all residents of the orphanage in the form of tote bag decorating activities. The activity of decorating the tote bag will be carried out using 3 coloring techniques, namely: Coloring with acrylic paint, stencil technique, and stamp technique. These three techniques are very easy for persons with disabilities to do. They only need to color, cut out the paper pattern which will then be printed on the tote bag and sample certain letters that have been colored. The results of decorating the tote bag will have a fairly good economic value so that it can be beneficial for the orphanage.
