“The Future of Arts” as the theme of this year’s PSPSR anniversary highlights the future of art, both in terms of form and position, in the context of contemporary society. That future is not merely a continuation of the present or a projection of the present, but rather an imagined hope or condition that has yet to take shape. Furthermore, art actually contributes to shaping the future because art is part of social practice, especially in its role in creating a symbolic world. Art, as we know, carries aesthetic values that not only inspire but also make life more intense.

The future of art has become increasingly complicated since the COVID-19 pandemic struck more than a year ago and continues to this day. Although artistic practices have continued amid social and physical restrictions, the pandemic has inevitably changed the presentation of art facilitated by Internet technology (digital). The pandemic has been a contemplative and creative moment for artists. As a result, new modes of creation, presentation, discourse, mediation, and circulation of artworks have emerged that transcend geographical boundaries. In addition, the pandemic has further emphasized the role of technology in shaping the modes of representation and presentation of artworks, which in turn has transformed the art scene.

However, there are a number of critical questions that can be asked regarding artistic practices during the pandemic, including:

Does the interactivity that has emerged from artistic practices during the pandemic have a relational content, or is it merely a technological imperative?
Does the element of playfulness found in new media art expressions based on technology still carry the spirit of emancipation?
Is it still relevant to talk about art autonomy in the future when technology intertwined with neoliberal ideology has colored current artistic practices?
Can mediation of liveness be considered an effort to encourage participation among audiences?
