Two students from the Master’s Program in Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies (PSPSR) UGM, Febri Anugerah and Isradina Paricha, from the art collective Lelaku Studio, were participating artists in the Biennale Jatim XI, which took place from 20 August to 20 September 2025. The biennale, which is being held at the Pudak Gallery in Gresik, East Java, is themed Hantu Laut: The Spectre of The Sea and serves as a space to re-examine society’s relationship with the ocean. Lelaku Studio, active since 2018, is known for its distinctive artistic practice that merges archaeological research with material innovation. Their focus on repurposing High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic is not merely an aesthetic choice but also a principled stance aligned with sustainable production and environmental stewardship.

The Study Program of Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies (PSPSR) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has officially opened its art exhibition, “Re.uni(que): Menganyam Pesona dan Merajut Perjumpaan.” The inauguration took place on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at Building Unit 03 of the Graduate School. This significant event is a cornerstone of the PSPSR Syawalan Seni series. Also, it celebrates two important milestones: the 36th anniversary of Lono Simatupang’s academic legacy and the 34th year of the PSPSR program itself. The exhibition will be accessible to the public until May 21, 2025.
On Friday, August 16, 2024, Cleaning the Site and performing the Umbul Donga were the next events in the Kolaborasa #2 Community Service series, organized by the 2023 class of Master’s students from the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada.
The activities began with cleaning the site, followed by a collective prayer session (Umbul Donga) attended by students and local community members. The Umbul Donga, as part of the efforts to preserve traditional customs (“nguri-nguri” adat), was carried out with the hope that it would continue as an expression of gratitude for the conservation of the Kenteng site conducted by PSPSR UGM students. Interestingly, the site is located at the border between villages, so the prayers were led by three community leaders: Ky Ponidi (from Kenteng Hamlet), Ky Ato (from Morobangun Hamlet), and Ky Musyafa (from Wonokromo, Bantul). The event was also attended by Gus Awaludin GD Mu’alif, head of the Muslim Artists and Cultural Figures Organization (Lembaga Seniman Budayawan Muslimin Indonesia) for the D.I. Yogyakarta region.
The Umbul Donga concluded with a Jathilan performance, representing the connection between the Kenteng Morobangun site and the Panji Morobangun legend. This activity aimed to raise public awareness of the importance of the historical site surrounding them. It also aligned with the implementation of SDGs 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). (AZ)
