The Doctoral Study Program in Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies, Graduate School, Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a dissertation monitoring session for students at the Dissertation Boot Camp at the Puri Asri Hotel & Resort in Magelang. This session was one of several key activities included in the Dissertation Boot Camp program. The monitoring session happened before the students got some intensive guidance from their promotor and co-promotor the next day.
During this dissertation monitoring session, students talked about their progress, explaining which stages they’d already finished and when they plan to finish the rest. They also talked about the challenges they faced during the research and writing processes. Some participants said that students often have a hard time with the journal article stage because they have to publish in indexed international journals. This process can take a long time, from when they submit their article to when it’s finally published. But even with these challenges, the PSPSR UGM doctoral students are still super excited to finish their dissertations. Dr. Sri Margana, M.Hum., M.Phil., the Head of the Doctoral Program in Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies, said “Writing the journal article is a task that should not be taken lightly, as there are submission deadlines that must be carefully considered.”
To deal with the challenges of publishing journal articles, Dr. Sri Margana suggests organizing a coaching clinic that’s specifically for that purpose. We’re hoping that this will help us deal with these challenges more effectively.
Dr. Sri Margana also told everyone at the results seminar that at stage 1, students had to present their research data collection progress. So, there’s no need to wait to finish the final chapters, because later this stage will be included in seminar results 2. Dr. Sri Margana also mentioned that students who’ve received LoA for journal articles can register for seminar results 2.
This dissertation monitoring activity contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly regarding:
- SDG 4 (Quality Education): providing more intensive supervision to students to ensure their academic journey is well-directed.
- SDG 5 (Gender Equality): ensuring no gender-based discrimination in the provision of academic facilities and resources for doctoral students.
- SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): collaborating with external parties to facilitate the smooth conduct of dissertation monitoring for PSPSR UGM doctoral students. (IH)
