On August 17th 2024, PSPSR UGM held a community service at Kenteng, Morobangun, Prambanan, Sleman. One of the programs was the Sasirangan Workshop. Sasirangan is a traditional technique of textile manipulation that uses drawstring and color dye to create patterns. Sasirangan production is a meticulous process involving several steps. Initially, the textile is cleaned with detergent before undergoing a mordanting process using ash and potassium alum, followed by careful drying away from direct sunlight. Once prepared, intricate designs are sketched onto the fabric and then stitched by hand. The textile is subsequently gathered by pulling the string tightly before being immersed in dye and then a mordant solution to set the color. This dyeing and fixing process is typically repeated two or three times to achieve the desired color intensity and durability. read more

The series of community service activities by the 2023 cohort of Master’s students from the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies (PSPSR) Program in Madurejo Village continues. On Friday, August 16, 2024, following a local night vigil ceremony, PSPSR students held a discussion event themed “Reactualization and Conservation of the Kenteng Site in the Framework of the Panji Story.” In the spirit of commemorating Indonesia’s independence as a symbol of the heroes’ struggle, the main aim of the discussion was to inform and promote the conservation of the Kenteng Morobangun Site, which holds a long history closely related to the oral traditions of the local community. read more

The dance and music workshop was part of the community service program (Kolaborasa #2) organized by the 2023 cohort of Master’s students from the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies Program. The workshop took place in Kenteng Hamlet, Madurejo Village, Prambanan District, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. It was held from August 11 to 17, 2024, and the results were presented on August 18, 2024, in the form of a cultural parade to celebrate the 79th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia. read more

On Friday, August 16, 2024, Cleaning the Site and performing the Umbul Donga were the next events in the Kolaborasa #2 Community Service series, organized by the 2023 class of Master’s students from the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada.
The activities began with cleaning the site, followed by a collective prayer session (Umbul Donga) attended by students and local community members. The Umbul Donga, as part of the efforts to preserve traditional customs (“nguri-nguri” adat), was carried out with the hope that it would continue as an expression of gratitude for the conservation of the Kenteng site conducted by PSPSR UGM students. Interestingly, the site is located at the border between villages, so the prayers were led by three community leaders: Ky Ponidi (from Kenteng Hamlet), Ky Ato (from Morobangun Hamlet), and Ky Musyafa (from Wonokromo, Bantul). The event was also attended by Gus Awaludin GD Mu’alif, head of the Muslim Artists and Cultural Figures Organization (Lembaga Seniman Budayawan Muslimin Indonesia) for the D.I. Yogyakarta region.
The Umbul Donga concluded with a Jathilan performance, representing the connection between the Kenteng Morobangun site and the Panji Morobangun legend. This activity aimed to raise public awareness of the importance of the historical site surrounding them. The Accreditation Status of the Master’s Program in Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies (PSPSR) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has officially changed from “A” to “Unggul” as of August 19, 2024. This accreditation conversion process was undertaken to comply with the regulations of the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) in an effort to maintain the quality of educational institutions in Indonesia, as well as the Program’s commitment to continuously providing Quality Education, as outlined in SDG 4 (Quality Education). The new Accreditation Certificate, based on Decree No. 5491/SK/BAN-PT/Ak.KP/M/VIII/2024, has been issued, positioning the PSPSR UGM Master’s Program as one of the leading programs in the field of performing arts and visual arts studies. On Friday, August 9, 2024, the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies Program (PSPSR) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) received a visit from the Department of Art and Design, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang (UM). The visit was attended by 30 lecturers from the Department of Art and Design, Faculty of Letters, UM.

The event took place in Meeting Room A, 5th floor, UGM Graduate School Building. The delegation from UM was led by the Department Chair, Dr. Wida Rahayuningtyas, M.Pd., who also serves as the Coordinator of the Dance and Music Arts Education Study Program. On Monday, August 5, 2024, the Study Program of Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies (PSPSR) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held an event to welcome new master’s and doctoral students. The event, titled “Beyond the Gate,” took place in the Meeting Room A on the 5th floor of the UGM Graduate School.

The event was attended by Dr. Rr. Paramitha Dyah Fitriasari, M.Hum., Head of the Master’s Program; Dr. Budi Irawanto, S.I.P., M.A., Head of the Doctoral Program; Dr. G.R. On Sunday, August 4, 2024, the first community service activity by the 2023 batch of Master of Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies (PSPSR) students commenced. The event took place in Kenteng hamlet, Madurejo village, Prambanan sub-district, Sleman, D.I. Yogyakarta. This series of activities will continue from August 16 to 18. The first day’s event was a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on “Historiography of Local Knowledge Regarding the Kenteng Morobangun Site.” The main objective was to explore the knowledge from the Kenteng site in Kenteng hamlet, as a conservation effort and to preserve the collective memory of this historical site. read more

Agim Gunawan, a student from the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies Program at the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), has been selected as one of the participants in the 2024 Cultural Advancement Residency Program. This program is initiated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology through the Directorate of Cultural Personnel and Institutions Development.

The residency involves cultural practitioners from various countries such as the United States, Australia, the Netherlands, Brunei Darussalam, Ecuador, the Philippines, India, Italy, Canada, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Egypt, Poland, Thailand, Greece, and Jordan, who will collaborate with national cultural practitioners from Indonesia. There are three locations for this program focusing on Cultural Advancement Objects (OPK), namely the traditional sport Jemparingan in Yogyakarta, Losari Mask Dance in Cirebon, West Java, and Pantun Musicalization and Oral Tradition in Pekanbaru, Riau. read more
