The Grha Sabha Pramana Building at Universitas Gadjah Mada once again witnessed the success of hundreds of students who have completed their studies. In a graduation ceremony held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, a total of 991 graduates from various study programs received their master’s and doctoral degrees.
One of the study programs that contributed to the success of this graduation was the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies (PSPSR) Program. A number of PSPSR students successfully obtained their master’s degrees with interesting theses relevant to the development of contemporary art. They are Aulia Pramesti Rizki Utami (Tami Aulia) with her thesis exploring the creative space of cover musicians on social media, Nurul Fajri Kusumaningrum who researched the commodification of nostalgia in popular music, Arung Hutari Dea Premita who evaluated theatrical performances as social criticism, and Zanet Arief who analyzed the role of choir coaches.
Not only at the master’s level, PSPSR also contributed students at the doctoral level. Rudy Wiratama successfully completed his dissertation discussing the form and function of characters in wayang gedhog.
The success of the PSPSR graduates demonstrates the high quality of education and the relevance of this study program to the development of the world of art and culture, as well as its contribution to achieving SDG 4, quality education. Their theses not only enrich the body of knowledge but also make a real contribution to the development of art in Indonesia.
The Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Prof. dr. Ova Emilia, M.Med.Ed., Sp.OG(K)., Ph.D., in her speech, congratulated all the graduates. She hopes that the graduates can continue to develop their potential and make positive contributions to society.” (AU)
Two students from the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies Program (PSPSR) at UGM, Nurul Fajri Kusumaningrum and Arung Hutari Dea Premita, have successfully passed a significant milestone in their academic journey by defending their theses last June.

This research was supervised by two experienced lecturers, Dr. Phil. Oki Rahadianto Sutopo, S.Sos., M.Si., and Dr. G.R. Lono L. Simatupang, M.A.

To improve the quality of academic writing and critical thinking skills in building scientific arguments, as part of efforts to promote quality education (SDGs 4), Performing Arts and Arts Arts Studies Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada held the Scientific Writing Series #3 with the theme: Constructing Scientific Arguments on Monday, June 10, 2024. This series was presented by Dr. phil. Vissia Ita Yulianto, who emphasized the steps to construct scientific arguments. One key point highlighted was the interrelation between different elements within a scientific paper. In every scientific writing, there are always two main components: the controlling idea and the supporting idea. The controlling idea is the author’s general statement, while the supporting idea consists of thoughts or information that back up the general idea.
The third Scientific Writing Series was opened by the Head of the Master’s Program of PSPSR UGM, Dr. Rr. Paramitha Dyah Fitriasari, M.Hum., who stated that this activity is crucial for students as it greatly supports their academic process, especially in completing the scientific writings that are a requirement during their studies. The Doctoral Program in Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies at the Graduate School of UGM organized a Dissertation Boot Camp for doctoral students of PSPSR UGM from May 31 to June 2, 2024, at Oxalis Hotel Magelang. The Boot Camp featured four main activities: monitoring and evaluating student progress, international journal writing training, intensive guidance, and independent work. In his opening remarks, Dr. Budi Irawanto, S.I.P.,M.A., the Head of the Doctoral Program at PSPSR UGM, stated that writing a dissertation is a very solitary activity, often involving intense self-reflection. Therefore, as outlined in the event’s Terms of Reference, students need to be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to write their dissertations systematically, directed, and on time, enabling them to complete their dissertations more effectively and efficiently, inline with SDGs number 4 about Quality Education.

On Friday, May 31, 2024, the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies (PSPSR) program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) successfully held its Scientific Writing Series #2. This event was a continuation of the first series held on Friday, May 3, 2024. The event began at 8:30 AM, featuring Prof. Nurdiana Gaus, S.S., PGDIP., Ph.D. as the speaker, and took place in Room 203, Unit II of the UGM Graduate School. Approximately 30 master’s students from PSPSR UGM attended the session.
The event commenced with an opening speech by the Head of the PSPSR program, Dr. Rr. Paramitha Dyah Fitriasari, M.Hum. The primary focus of the session was to introduce PSPSR UGM master’s students to academic journals and guide them on how to write scientific journals correctly. Prof. Nurdiana Gaus, S.S., PGDIP., Ph.D. extensively discussed the introduction section of a scientific journal. The introduction is deemed crucial because a well-crafted introduction facilitates the writing of subsequent sections up to the conclusion. A well-written introduction also helps readers to understand the content and the author’s thought process.
